Here we have another one of these great transit roads in Switzerland with mountain passes on both sides. A sublime ribbon of tarmac, running through a pristine alpine valley. This route is so good to ride, in most jurisdictions it would qualify as a 5 star ride, but the competition is pretty high in this area. This road carries a fair volume of traffic, so it can be a bit congested. On the other hand, it is fairly wide and open, so there are plenty of passing opportunities.

Given we are in Switzerland, the surface is superlative for the whole of this route. You primarily use this route to get form, or to, the high passes in eastern Switzerland to the main valley which carries the autoroute. For this review we are riding form Davos to the Thusis. Davos itself can be quite busy and seems to go on forever. Once you are clear of Davos, things start getting interesting with low meadows-type scenery mostly medium sweepers and a few short excellent stretches where you can get a great rhythm going. Below Frauenkirchen you start getting a series of tunnels and then sections of great flick-able curves and a couple of hairpins all the way down to Tiefencastel. At Tiefencastel you join with the main road up to St Moritz, so the rest ride down the canyon to Thusis can be even more crowed.

But, if you happen to get lucky and get some clear road, wow what a ride! There are a couple of sections or perfectly formed curves along the side of the hill that can provide some of the most rhythmic riding on the planet. At the end you have one long tunnel that delivers you into the wide Hinterrhein valley. We rate this a easy route.
